I have used visual imagery and other calming techniques in the past to overcome anxiety and fear with very positive results. This year I discovered that I have an unexplained growing fear of heights. This is bothersome because I am an avid backpacker and many of the most beautiful destinations involve hiking on high narrow trails. Much of the advice I have found so far has been geared toward the “flooding” technique but I hesitate to even consider that method as I fear it could make things much worse. This summer I am sceduled to hike the steep narrow Kalalau trail in Hawaii but a little concerned that I might not be able to get a handle on this fear and will have to turn back and miss out on an amazing experience. Hopefully I can learn to control the worst of it and maybe even be calm enough to enjoy the incredible views afforded by the 800’+ cliffs.
