We all spend a great deal of time working, so work is an extremely important part of our lives. And research has found that people who love their work and who continue working through passion after retirement age tend to live a lot longer and report greater happiness levels than people who don’t do that or people who have low morale at work. So a happy, functioning, healthy work life is extremely important.
And of course there are work skills to increase the likelihood that we find this satisfaction in our work lives. These skills of course blend with some of the personal productivity skills; so for example, being able to organize our time is increasingly important, being able to communicate effectively at work is extremely important, being able to lead other people without being a control freak is extremely important.
Perfectionism can actually derail effectiveness at work. Demanding the absolute best all the time of everybody can actually backfire and have diminishing returns. Being able to compromise expectations sometimes means that we can lead more effectively because we make allowances for individual differences in work colleagues. Other work skills include the ability to manage our own emotions; to plan effectively; to see the bigger picture; to see opportunities as well, either for career advancement or for business opportunities or opportunities in developing other people who work for us or work with us.
Emotional health and work efficiency so often coexist. People who become overly stressed at work immediately tend to start becoming much less efficient, so the psychological health of a person - the ability to think clearly, to plan, to strategize, to manage time, to manage other people but also to compromise with other people - all these skills together make for a happy, productive working life.
The skills and techniques and tips contained within the articles in this section of the site really focus on how we can all become much better at work but also how we can all enjoy work so much more, which is so important.
